The Benson, Peter Pennoyer Architects
The Benson at 1045 Madison Ave offers 15 units, including three penthouses, featuring a private spa, rooftop lounge, fitness center, basketball court, and custom kitchens. ShareWhile New York City real estate has increasingly leaned towards premium offerings, the Upper East Side retains its unique charm, characterized by proximity to Central Park, the Guggenheim Museum, and boutique shopping along Madison Avenue. The allure of this neighbourhood is further enhanced by its historic and elegant architecture, with many buildings featuring classic limestone facades, case in point—The Benson.
Located at 1045 Madison Ave, it is the first new residential building to be constructed on Madison Avenue in two decades. Designed by Peter Pennoyer Architects and developed by the Naftali Group, The Benson seamlessly integrates with the neighbourhood’s timeless aesthetic, featuring a dramatic front entry, mullioned windows, and iron-railed terraces. This new building respects and enhances the historic architecture that defines the Upper East Side.
The Benson offers a stately and classical arrival experience with its sculpted Indiana limestone facade and detailed iron double-set doors. Inside, the lobby, designed by famed yacht and private residence designer Achille Salvagni, exudes sophistication and intimacy. The lobby features elegant wood and stone entry vestibules, leading to an oval lobby with fluted walls and a backlit onyx fireplace. This jewel box lobby sets the tone for the rest of the building, embodying the heart and soul of the Upper East Side.
The Benson’s living rooms are a blend of traditional and contemporary elements. They feature classic proportions, oversized windows, and generous ceiling heights, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The enfilade of entertaining spaces—including the living room, formal dining room, and library—aligns with large west-facing windows, allowing each space to be bathed in warm afternoon light. The corner dining rooms are designed with integrated pocket doors, allowing for a seamless transition between casual and formal dining settings.
The 15 units at The Benson include a mix of half-floor, full-floor, and duplex condominiums. Among these units are three penthouses and one duplex townhouse with its own gardens. The penthouses range from three to seven bedrooms, with private outdoor spaces offering views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. The master suites at The Benson are designed as true sanctuaries, occupying their own wings with generous walk-in closets and elegantly appointed master baths. The master bathrooms feature oversized windows above soaking tubs, hand-laid stone floors, custom vanities, large rain showers, and radiant heated floors. The Benson’s penthouses are perched high above Madison Avenue, offering captivating views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline, each featuring French doors opening onto private terraces framed by elegant architectural details.
The kitchens at The Benson are a result of a collaboration between Christopher Peacock and Peter Pennoyer. These custom kitchens combine fine craftsmanship with state-of-the-art appliances. The kitchen islands feature rounded corners, Calacatta Gold countertops, and hand-painted midnight blue millwork. The custom-fluted hood, backlit and vented to the outside, is both beautiful and practical. The cabinetry, designed by Christopher Peacock, includes solid walnut interiors and polished nickel pulls, enhancing the overall luxury and functionality of the kitchens.
The Benson offers a variety of thoughtful amenities designed to enhance residents’ lifestyles. The rooftop lounge, known as the Park Bar, features a fire pit and direct views of Central Park. The cinema room, designed by Achille Salvagni, includes a custom wet bar and popcorn machine. The private spa offers steam and sauna rooms, while the fitness centre features top-of-the-line equipment. Additionally, the building includes a half-sized basketball court with wood-panelled walls and a stylish atelier for creative pursuits. The development provides a range of services which include a 24-hour doorman, a full-time concierge, and a pet spa. The building also offers bicycle storage and a cold storage room for food and flower deliveries.
