Orient Express La Minerva will debut as the inaugural hotel in the brand’s collection
Orient Express La Minerva, opening in Spring 2025 in Rome's Piazza della Minerva, blends 17th-century heritage with contemporary luxury. ShareIn Spring 2025, Rome will see the arrival of a new chapter in luxury hospitality with the opening of Orient Express La Minerva. Located in Piazza della Minerva, just a stone’s throw from the Pantheon, the hotel marks the debut of the prestigious Orient Express brand in the world of hotels. The property, steeped in history as the former Palazzo Fonseca, dates back to the 17th century and occupies a site that is both monumental and intimate, a true Roman landmark.
The transformation into Orient Express La Minerva was spearheaded by Arsenale SpA, who acquired the building in 2021. Under the artistic vision of Hugo Toro, a Franco-Mexican architect and interior designer, the property has undergone a meticulous renovation, restoring its architectural and historical significance while infusing it with contemporary sophistication.
The hotel’s history is deeply rooted in Rome’s cultural and social fabric. Built in 1620 as the residence of the aristocratic Fonseca family, it later became a luxurious retreat for travelers during the Grand Tour, hosting notable figures such as Stendhal, Vittorio Alfieri, and Herman Melville. Even Pope Pius IX graced its halls. In 1811, the building was reimagined as a hotel under the ownership of the French Sauve family. This legacy has been thoughtfully preserved in the new design, which draws inspiration from Roman domus and the city’s artistic heritage, blending elements of art deco with contemporary elegance.
Guests of Orient Express La Minerva will step into a world where Rome’s historical grandeur meets modern luxury. The lobby, anchored by the iconic statue of the Roman goddess Minerva sculpted by Rinaldo Rinaldi in 1854, sets the tone for an experience that honors the past while celebrating the present. The statue’s presence underscores the hotel’s commitment to art and craftsmanship, themes that echo throughout its interiors.
Dining at La Minerva is an experience in itself. La Minerva Bar, situated under the building’s historic skylight, pays homage to its namesake deity with a menu that celebrates artistry in food and drink. Meanwhile, the Voliera rooftop restaurant and bar serves Mediterranean cuisine and signature cocktails against the breathtaking backdrop of Rome’s skyline. Guests can take in sweeping views of iconic landmarks such as Saint Peter’s Basilica, Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, and the Altare della Patria. The hotel’s spa takes inspiration from ancient Roman baths, creating a sanctuary of wellness and relaxation. Traditional rituals and modern treatments combine to offer guests a restorative escape, reflecting the timeless appeal of Rome’s culture of purification and rejuvenation.
Gilda Perez-Alvarado, CEO of Orient Express, described the opening as a significant milestone for the brand, stating, “This milestone proudly marks the long-anticipated arrival of our first Orient Express hotel – Orient Express La Minerva. Here, Orient Express meets the soul of the Eternal City, creating a unique space where stories are shared and cultures converge.” Her words capture the essence of what this hotel aims to offer—a gathering place for travelers and locals alike, where the spirit of Rome is celebrated through hospitality and design.
For those seeking venues for private events or business gatherings, Orient Express La Minerva offers a range of sophisticated options. The Olimpo Ballroom, adorned with Murano chandeliers and marble statues by Rinaldi depicting the four elements, seasons, and continents, serves as the crown jewel of the event spaces. Three additional meeting rooms provide flexibility for hosting a variety of occasions, all imbued with the elegance and attention to detail synonymous with the Orient Express name.
The vibrant neighbourhood Pigna is at the true heart of Rome with a central location and within walking distance of the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Colosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, museums, boutiques, restaurants and bars. Reservations are now open for arrivals starting on 1 April 2025, allowing travellers to be among the first to experience this extraordinary addition to Rome’s hospitality scene.
