Six Senses Quexigal Palace: Reviving a 16th-century royal village in Spain
Six Senses Quexigal Palace near Madrid will transform a 16th-century royal estate into a 60-key luxury resort blending history, sustainability, and modern wellness, opening in 2026. ShareHidden in the picturesque province of Ávila, less than an hour’s drive from Madrid, a historic estate is being reimagined for the modern traveler. Six Senses has announced its plans to transform El Quexigal, a 16th-century palace surrounded by 100 hectares (250 acres) of lush countryside, into a luxurious retreat that blends history, sustainability, and exceptional hospitality. Slated to open at the end of 2026, this ambitious project is a partnership between Six Senses, Sidercom, and El Enebro, promising an experience that seamlessly connects past and present.
El Quexigal was built in 1563 by Juan de Herrera, the renowned architect behind Spain’s El Escorial. Originally commissioned as a country estate for King Felipe II, the property was a hub of agricultural and recreational activity. Operated by Jerome monks, the estate produced oil, wine, honey, and wood, with the quejigos oak lending its name to the land. Once celebrated as one of Spain’s most beautiful estates, the property is now undergoing a meticulous restoration by Madrid-based Arvo Arquitectura, with interiors envisioned by Raphaël Navot, a noted designer who embraces “natural future” principles.
Commenting on the brand’s first signing on the Spanish mainland, Six Senses CEO Neil Jacobs said, “To experience Six Senses Quexigal Palace is to embark on a country resort experience that starts within the hallowed halls of this incredible 16th-century palace and leads you out to the beautiful grounds, which are themselves a playground for outdoor pursuits and exploration in nature. We are delighted to partner with El Enebro and Sidercom to help write the next chapter in the story of this singular heritage restoration, one that will come to life in the care we take in even the smallest details.”
The property’s transformation includes the restoration of the main palace and its auxiliary buildings to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a royal village. The existing courtyard, great hall, and other architectural features will be preserved, while new accommodations and amenities are thoughtfully integrated. The resort will offer 60 guest accommodations, including 13 suites and a presidential suite with private gardens. A five-bedroom villa, fully serviced and ideal for private events or family gatherings, adds to the estate’s versatility.
Dining will follow the philosophy of local, sustainable, and seasonal cuisine. Guests can savor dishes crafted from ingredients grown on-site, served in the signature restaurant, intimate salons, and private garden dining spots. The estate will also feature a tasting room, a pool bar and grill, a secret bar, and a themed bar in the old aviary, adding a touch of whimsy to the experience. Owned by prominent Spanish wine families, the property’s connection to exceptional Spanish wines is sure to elevate the dining experience.
At the heart of Six Senses Quexigal Palace is a commitment to wellness, sustainability, and connection with nature. The spa will feature signature treatments alongside cutting-edge therapies, including infrared and Finnish saunas, a vitality pool, a halotherapy cave, and biohacking devices. Guests can immerse themselves in workshops at the Alchemy Bar, creating their own scrubs and masks from garden-sourced herbs and oils.
For families, the Grow With Six Senses program offers engaging activities for children, ensuring they’re entertained while adults relax. As night falls, the estate’s observation deck becomes a gateway to the cosmos. With optimal stargazing conditions near the European Space Agency’s Cebreros Station, guests can marvel at the night sky. Sustainability underpins every aspect of the project. From the reuse of existing materials to the construction of an Earth Lab showcasing the estate’s eco-friendly initiatives, Six Senses aims to honor the estate’s legacy while crafting a sustainable future.
Six Senses Quexigal Palace is part of IHG’s growing presence in Spain, joining a portfolio of 55 hotels and 15 properties in development. It also marks the brand’s eighth location in Europe, alongside destinations in Italy, France, Switzerland, and more. This new addition complements the brand’s existing property in the Spanish Balearics, Six Senses Ibiza, solidifying its commitment to offering exceptional experiences across the region. When it opens in late 2026, Six Senses Quexigal Palace will offer a haven for families, couples, and adventurers alike.
